AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL SLAMS BRITAIN FOR DRACONIAN 'ORWELLIAN' STATE SECURITY, SURVEILLANCE & HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS
Amnesty have drawn some key conclusions in their report. The 14 EU member states examined have shifted from a position of security so that people may live free and in liberty, to one where human rights and civil liberties are becoming increasingly eroded for an increasingly securitised state. When states sacrifice our core fundamental values of freedom and democracy just to increase the security apparatus, to make conditions harder for every citizen, it becomes a dystopia reality.
And it's getting worse.
Some want far right interests, an erosion of civil liberties, human rights; increased surveillance and securitization. More fear. But there are many of us who believe that we must uphold the liberties and freedoms that make humanity great. Human rights. Progress.
The Amnesty report evidences the UK is now amongst the worst of these 14 EU member states who all have worsening track records of security by means of undermining freedom. From expedited processes, derogation from human rights, decreases in judicial oversight, increased power to executive/agencies/intelligence services, reduced standards of proof in legal cases, to thought crimes and the targeting of migrants/refugees/activists/journalists; an erosion of human rights and free expression. Europe is in crisis.
Too many Trumpers/Brexit/far right want to usher in a dystopian Hunger Games style future of world of walls and fences, fear and prejudice. Just say no.
